Why We Built Blue Replies: The Problem with Business Messaging

Business Messaging Is Broken
We started Blue Replies because we experienced the same frustration that millions of businesses face every day: customers ignore most of the messages you send them.
Think about your own phone. How many unread SMS messages do you have right now? Probably dozens — carrier alerts, two-factor codes, spam texts about "qualifying for a new rate," and somewhere buried in there, a legitimate message from a business you actually care about. That business spent money to send that message, and it was dead on arrival.
Now think about your iMessage conversations. You read every single one, usually within minutes. The blue bubbles are reserved for people and conversations you care about. That is the channel where real engagement happens.
The SMS Trap
We watched businesses pour millions into SMS marketing infrastructure only to hit a wall. The numbers tell the story:
- SMS open rates have declined 30% since 2020 as carrier filtering has gotten more aggressive
- 10DLC registration turned a "set up in an hour" channel into a "wait 2-4 weeks and hope for approval" process
- Even approved A2P senders see 10-15% of messages silently filtered by carriers
- Customers increasingly report business SMS as spam, creating a death spiral of deliverability
SMS was a great channel in 2015. By 2025, it was a channel where businesses spent more and more to reach fewer and fewer people. Something had to change.
The iMessage Opportunity
We noticed something obvious that the industry had overlooked: 62% of US smartphone users are on iPhone. These users check their Messages app dozens of times daily. And unlike SMS, iMessage messages are never filtered, never blocked, and always delivered with the trust signal of a blue bubble.
The problem was that there was no good way for businesses to send iMessages programmatically. Apple does not offer a business API for iMessage. The few solutions that existed were fragile, undocumented, and not built for scale.
We spent two years building Blue Replies to solve this. We wanted to create the Twilio experience — simple, well-documented, developer-friendly — but for iMessage. A single API call to send a message, webhooks for real-time events, and SDKs in every major language.
Our Design Principles
1. Developer-first, always.
Every feature starts with the API design. If it is not clean, documented, and intuitive, it does not ship. We have seen too many communication APIs that feel like they were designed by committee. Our API has one way to do things, and that one way is the right way.
2. Reliability is non-negotiable.
When a business sends a message to a customer, that message has to arrive. Period. Our infrastructure is built with automatic failover across multiple availability zones, and we maintain a 99.9% uptime SLA. Every message delivery is logged and auditable.
3. Compliance should be automatic.
Businesses should not need a legal team to send messages. We built opt-out handling, consent logging, and TCPA compliance tools directly into the platform. You focus on the message; we handle the regulations.
4. Pricing should be predictable.
Per-message pricing creates anxiety. "Should I send this message? Is it worth $0.008?" That calculation should never happen. Our flat monthly plans include generous message allowances so businesses can communicate freely without counting pennies.
Where We Are Today
